Our Backstory

Our founder, Valerie Phoenix, started Tech By Choice in 2018 to help marginalized communities have access to personal development and skill-building workshops, ensuring that they gain the necessary skills to enter and succeed in tech roles. We pair our skill building workshops with mental health and financial literacy programs to help our members find balance as we all navigate our tech journeys.

Since launching in 2018, we’ve launched three chapters, in Los Angeles, Oakland, and the DMV, where we’ve hosted over 20 events that supported over 1000 members. Over the years we’ve found new and fun ways to learn and grow together.

We’re dedicated to ensuring that diversity exists in tech, and we’re helping people in our communities enter, stay and thrive in the industry.

Job Description

In this role, you will act as a developer or design advocate for Tech by Choice by creating learning content under our community name. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of our content across underrepresented folks in tech and building your own brand. Your role will include engaging with the tech community, creating and disseminating educational content, and serving as a role model and mentor in our advocacy efforts.

Because Tech Advocates will be at the center of our content creation for our community, this person will have to embody the Tech by Choice values and mission and be able to follow our CoC while presenting the brand online and in person.

Tech Advocates will be able to support events in the following pillars and will be able to choose their selected media type (written/video/workshops). During the application process, you can pick which pillar you would like to support, but if selected for this role, you can switch to support any pillar or media type you would like.

Show people that STEAM has multiple roles outside of just coding that many can thrive in. Through workshops, short talks, lightning talks, panels, or open candid spaces, members will learn how to navigate in a space not designed for them.
